The plant is native to Bolivia and West Central Brazil. It was cultivated as a condiment or used in the treatment of some medical disorders. Its use dates back to 1200 BC. The plant may be found in abandoned cultivated areas, forest edges, thickets, and roadsides. The peppers are rich in vitamins A and C.
